WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT – The Container House which is Easy for Dayz
“Easy for Dayz is a special space; a treasure box of memories and a container filled with dreams”.
In McGregor, this is a new construction concept: a hybrid of conventional build which clads a re-purposed shipping container and yet conforms to the aesthetic requirements of the best preserved Victorian village in the Western Cape.

This is a two-bedroomed house with a spacious, north-west facing patio with a built-in braai and splash pool, set in a waterwise garden. The house comfortably sleeps four people in two bedrooms (one en suite and the other with a double bunk) and with a second, separate bathroom.
The Easy for Dayz Story
“Easy for Dayz” is how the owner’s late brother would respond she asked what he felt like doing or eating – “I don’t know sis, I’m easy for dayz”.
Alonya continues, “It is a special space; a treasure box of memories and a container filled with dreams.
“I wanted to fulfil that dream for my beloved brother and best friend, yet I wanted to build something different and sustainable which embodied his thoughts around how life should be lived. It had to be ground-breaking and fresh, creative and bold while still being respectful to the natural environment.”
The hybrid construction of the house is a recycled shipping container that is wrapped with a wall and then plastered and whitewashed. This wall gives the container excellent thermal properties that protects the dwelling from the southeaster in summer and northwester in winter. The hybrid nature of the construction creates an inherently thick wall. This allows for deep reveals around small, punctured windows and doors that reflect the vernacular architecture and create passive screening from harsh sunlight.
The outside fireplace and braai area is an important sculptural element in the architecture. On the west façade of the house, the large overhang of the roof protects the deck and extends the living space through large barn-style sliding doors. Steps lead from the deck, which includes a splash pool, to the garden.

A BIT ABOUT THE QUAINT TOWN OF MC GREGOR
“Arrive As Strangers, Leave As Friends”.
About two or so hours’ drive from Cape Town (180km from the airport), and located half way along the Road to Nowhere, McGregor is the best-preserved Victorian village in the Western Cape, if not South Africa. McGregor was established in 1861, and is flanked on the north and south by the Langeberg and Riviersonderend mountains, respectively.
In McGregor you will find an eclectic group of people, from artisan bakers, creative chefs and cooks, to garagiste and boutique wineries, all of which produce award-winning wines. Creativity abounds among the folk who live in the village, with intellectuals, authors, poets and artists, with art galleries and working studios.
There are two nature reserves that offer great walks and hikes. The Kleinberg Reserve is an area to the west of the village, and which the local Heritage Society works hard to protect. The society also curates a museum, located in the Tourism Office, full of fascinating artefacts and facts about the village and its social and natural history. Just outside the village is Cape Nature’s Vrolijkheid Reserve which has one of the country’s few braille trails.
Not far from Vrolijkheid is Eeseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary, which is exactly that – a sanctuary for neglected and abused donkeys. Between Thursday and Sunday, visitors can meet, and even adopt, a donkey, or just have a bite in the little bistro that overlooks a tranquil dam.
McGregor is also an increasingly popular destination for mountain bikers, having twice been a spectator point for the Cape Epic, and having three times been included in the route. It’s also home to the three-day Ride2Nowhere, which emerged from the Epic, and which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2021.
